the three-day Conference on the Environment (UNEA) held in Paris at the end of May 2023. Or more precisely, it is the goal of a series of environmental conferences that have been meeting since 2014 and were mandated by 175 UN member states in Nairobi in 2022 to negotiate an international plastics agreement. A conclusion is planned for 2024. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/de\/ip_22_1466\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the European Commission from the year 2022, 300 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated annually. Of these 300 million tonnes, a 2022 publication will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/environment\/global-plastics-outlook_de747aef-en?utm_source=baulinks&amp;utm_campaign=baulinks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OECD study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to the report, about 41 per cent of plastic waste is either incinerated or disposed of illegally. This compares to only 9 per cent of plastic waste that is actually recycled - including downcycling. Our material <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ceramin.de\/en\/magazin\/groundbreaking-innovations-from-the-classen-group-at-bau-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CERAMIN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> impressively shows how a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalmagazin.com\/produkt-verbessert-mit-upcycling-andere-rohstoffe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upcycling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can function. But that doesn't mean it vanishes into thin air, but breaks down into microplastics. Microplastic that ends up, for example, in the oceans, then in marine animals and ultimately in our food. Microplastics represent a large part of the cautiously estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.de\/fileadmin\/fm-wwf\/Publikationen-PDF\/Plastik\/WWF-Auswirkungen_von_Plastikverschmutzung_im_Ozean_auf_marine_Arten__Biodiversit%C3%A4t_und_%C3%96kosysteme.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">150 million tonnes of plastic waste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> currently in the world's oceans. Waste avoidance is therefore one of our central concerns, which is why CERAMIN wall and floor coverings can be 100 percent recycled.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-94b1369 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no\" data-id=\"94b1369\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f04b6aa\" data-id=\"f04b6aa\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a438cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9a438cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Die Bedeutung eines internationalen Plastikabkommens<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0acdd9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0acdd9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Existing international agreements concerning waste in general already exist, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvl.bund.de\/DE\/Arbeitsbereiche\/04_Pflanzenschutzmittel\/03_Antragsteller\/13_Rechtsvorschriften\/03_intern_abk\/04_basel\/psm_intern_abk_basel_node.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basel Convention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, this is \"only\" about a controlled regulation of the export of hazardous waste, not a general stop. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How ineffective this is has become particularly drastic in recent years. By 2018, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.de\/2020\/august\/plastikmuell-mafia-im-aufwind\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WWF Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 2020, 85 per cent of all plastic waste exports from Europe will go to China. There is now a corresponding import ban there. Since then, this share has been distributed to several countries in Southeast Asia. These include above all countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam, which are structurally overburdened with this and cannot - for the most part - dispose of their waste properly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether and to what extent environmental conferences like the one in Paris will actually be able to effectively curb plastic waste is completely open. Among the 175 states discussing in Paris, a so-called high-ambition coalition of 50 countries (including the EU and Japan) is opposed by states such as China, the USA, Russia and Saudi Arabia, which reject waste prevention and only want to go about recycling and waste management, but not prevention. We have done this with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/classengroup.com\/2022\/11\/24\/neues-kunststoffrecyclingwerk-der-hc-plastics-setzt-massstaebe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint Venture HC Plastics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on its way. Here, plastic waste from polypropylene (PP for short) is recycled into the secondary raw material that is so important for us, which is then fed into our CERAMIN wall and floor coverings.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a kind of preliminary stage of an international export ban, the EU Parliament demanded in January 2023 in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/de\/headlines\/society\/20181212STO21610\/plastikmull-und-recycling-in-der-eu-zahlen-und-fakten?at_campaign=20234-Economy&amp;at_medium=Google_Ads&amp;at_platform=Search&amp;at_creation=DSA&amp;at_goal=TR_G&amp;at_audience=&amp;at_topic=Plastic_Waste&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwpuajBhBpEiwA_Ztfhe9p-TwXEJ7jWtnU2q2zVIdipHz9ibudZ816atOVlNMNifvQr-d0TxoCUaMQAvD_BwE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that exports of plastic waste should be banned at least to non-OECD countries and that shipments to OECD countries (34 member states in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) should be stopped within four years. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a8cdef2 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no\" data-id=\"a8cdef2\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-592a38a\" data-id=\"592a38a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e17ae7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3e17ae7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Recycling: Potentials and limits of the circular economy<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-431642b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"431642b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany is one of the world's most important countries, with an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/de.statista.com\/statistik\/daten\/studie\/1072629\/umfrage\/groesste-exporteure-von-kunststoffabfaellen-weltweit\/#:~:text=Die%20USA%20waren%20im%20Jahr,zu%20den%20f%C3%BCnf%20gr%C3%B6%C3%9Ften%20Ausfuhrl%C3%A4ndern.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 percent share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the world's third largest exporter of plastic waste. Most of this is commercial waste (e.g. production waste), the recycling of which is not economically viable in this country. However, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.de\/themen-projekte\/plastik\/plastikmuell-im-meer\/fragen-und-antworten-zu-plastikmuell\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WWF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these exports will be reduced from approximately 1 million tonnes (2019) to 766,200 tonnes in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a European comparison, Germany could be in a worse position when it comes to plastics recycling. In 2020, it underwent another extensive amendment. A central part of the amendment deals with a \"<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmuv.de\/themen\/wasser-ressourcen-abfall\/kreislaufwirtschaft\/abfallpolitik\/uebersicht-kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz\/die-obhutspflicht-im-kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duty of care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\" of the companies that produce plastic products. Essentially, this is about maintaining the usability of the product. Operational and organisational precautions must be taken for this purpose (e.g. careful handling, transport, storage, sale before expiry of shelf life, reduced sale through other distribution channels, donation of the product)\". However, even then it is only a \"latent basic obligation\" with considerable room for interpretation, at least from a layman's point of view. It should also be noted: \"The latent basic duty also induces the parties concerned to make voluntary commitments\". It is debatable how sustainable \"inducements to self-commitment\" are. How we stand on this, among other things, we have discussed in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/classengroup.com\/2022\/10\/10\/classen-gruppe-paradebeispiel-in-puncto-nachhaltigkeit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set out. The careful use of resources, continuous improvement of the life cycles of our products and complete recyclability have been our top priorities for generations. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3a2dae5 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no\" data-id=\"3a2dae5\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6b4e3b0\" data-id=\"6b4e3b0\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93a0af0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"93a0af0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The CERAMIN model: recycling to avoid plastic waste <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-675de79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"675de79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are convinced that with our company we are already much further along the path to the complete avoidance of plastic waste. Not only driven by a sense of responsibility for nature and health, but also by the fact that our industry has long been dominated by plastics, which have been proven to be particularly harmful.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) was considered the ideal plastic for flooring for decades. Cheap, waterproof, durable and reasonably robust. Nevertheless, PVC products consist of between 8 and 30 per cent plasticisers, which are extremely harmful to health. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ceramin.de\/en\/magazin\/pvc-and-health-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phthalates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By far the most commonly used phthalates are DINP, DEHP, DBP and BBP. All of them are on the official list of hazardous substances. It is not without reason that a general <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/op.europa.eu\/de\/publication-detail\/-\/publication\/e9e7684a-906b-11ec-b4e4-01aa75ed71a1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PVC ban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been on the European agenda for years and is now finally emerging.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deswegen enthalten unsere Produkte aus dem im eigenen Haus entwickelten und patentierten Werkstoff CERAMIN keine Phthalate und keine Weichmacher. CERAMIN besteht mehrheitlich aus nat\u00fcrlichem mineralischem F\u00fcllstoff und Polyolefinen, in der Hauptsache Polypropylen (PP). Bereits heute betr\u00e4gt der Rezyklatanteil in CERAMIN bereits mehr als 60 Prozent aus Rezyklaten.
