The most common reasons for renovation in Germany

The Renovation study 2024conducted by B+L Marktdaten GmbH, provides revealing insights into the motivations of homeowners and tenants in Germany who renovate and modernise their properties. From increasing living comfort to energy efficiency measures, the study shows which factors will shape renovation activities in 2024. Energy optimisation will play a central role due to increased energy prices, but the desire for a more beautiful, comfortable environment will also remain a strong driver.

Comfort of living is the most important reason for renovation

For many homeowners, the desire for greater living comfort is the top priority. According to the study, 57.9 per cent of respondents cited improving living comfort as the main reason for their renovation measures. This includes, in particular, interior work such as replacing floor coverings, doors or renovating bathrooms. High-quality and durable floor coverings that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to care for and robust are particularly popular.

Around 30 per cent of households have replaced flooring in one or more rooms in recent years. Many renovators value materials that not only look good but also create a healthy living environment. However, the study also shows continued demand for health-related information. questionable PVC productsMany consumers still lack reliable information about the healthiness of certain products for living.

Energy efficiency: save money and increase independence

Rising energy prices and the desire to reduce costs are motivating many households to undertake energy-efficient renovations. 56.2 per cent of those surveyed stated that they wanted to save money in the long term by undertaking renovation measures, in particular by reducing their energy costs. The most common measures include insulation work on the building envelope, the installation of photovoltaic systems and the replacement of heating systems. It is not only the saving of heating costs that plays a role here, but also the desire to become less dependent on rising energy prices and fossil fuels. Underfloor heating, which stores heat, can contribute to this.

Flooring: the look and feel are paramount

Replacing flooring is one of the most common renovation measures in German households. It is often not wear and tear or damage that drives the change, but the desire for a modern and aesthetically pleasing design. According to the study, visual and haptic aspects are at the forefront. Consumers attach particular importance to durability, ease of care and a healthy indoor climate. They prefer materials that not only look good but are also easy to clean and as durable as possible. The resilience of the floor coverings plays an important role, especially in family households or in heavily frequented areas.

Sustainable flooring: for the sake of the environment

In addition to the look and feel, the sustainability of floor coverings is also increasingly coming into focus. More and more consumers are looking for floor coverings that are manufactured in an environmentally friendly way and cause little environmental impact over their entire life cycle. However, the reality is that many of the common floor coverings, such as carpet, laminate or vinyl flooring, lack true recyclability. While some flooring can theoretically be recycled, the recycling structures available are often inadequate, meaning that a lot of materials end up in landfills or are incinerated. When choosing flooring, you should therefore look for certificates that confirm that the product has been manufactured in an environmentally friendly way and that it is recyclable.

Conclusion: healthy living and energy efficiency as the key to the future

The 2024 renovation study makes it clear that the motives for renovating are diverse – from improving living comfort to saving costs through energy efficiency. But all renovators have one thing in common: they want to make their home more beautiful, comfortable and future-proof.

Products such as CERAMIN® Floor coverings support this goal perfectly by being durable, easy to clean and healthy to live with, and they contribute to a healthy indoor climate. Whether in a new building or during renovation – the decision in favour of CERAMIN® is always a sustainable and future-oriented choice.
